LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) said on Tuesday that the Pakistan Television Corporation’s (PTV) fee could only be recovered from those who own television sets.
Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh heard the petition – filed by Punjab Assembly’s Opposition Leader Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed.
Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel – Shiraz Zaka – submitted that the PTV fee was discriminatory and lacked justification as it was also imposed on those who did not have television sets. She further argued that the levy of the fee had been imposed in violation of fundamental rights of citizens.
However, PTV’s legal adviser argued that the fee was imposed in accordance with the ‘Wireless Telegraphic Act 1933’ and ‘Television Receiving Apparatus Rules 1970’.
The court said that a person not owning a television set should approach the electricity distribution company concerned along with an affidavit stating the above to get relief.
